In the beginning of the semester, I had ideas ranging from from tribute art, to black excellence, to mental health and finally ended up with political symbolism. The American government and justice system needed to be mentioned And learned about. I drew a dreamcatcher on an American flag to symbolize that Native Americans live in disenfranchised communities and they are often forgotten about. America has stripped them of their cultural roots, land, and resources. They were manipulated and taken advantage of. Land was given to American government as a trade for money, relocation assistance, and compensation for their lost property. The tear and footsteps is a piece called The Trail of Tears. The symbols that the footsteps go around are symbols of the Native American tribes that were effected by this moment in history. The American government created an Indian Removal act to take away their land in different states and place them in a small part of Oklahoma. American soldiers marched the Native Americans more than 1,200 miles across state lines to Oklahoma. On that journey, more than 5,000 Native Americans died. Throughout the semester, I learned how to research the ideas that I want to portray. Being explicit and not too literal was a skill I had to learn when creating sketches. Art is Created to be abstract. The viewers may be looking at the same image but can interpret it differently. Inspiration can also come from other artists work. Someone can have a theme I agree with and I want to make my own. I also learned how hard it is to brainstorm ideas without knowing how to execute them on paper. This class has taught me how to be a better artist, how to expand my way of thinking, and how to be patient in the creative process. Great work comes from multiple trial and errors. I look forward to learning more about the creative process & how to execute my thoughts through art.
